GAME PLAN

It is not so surprising that a Houston homeowner and his wife, both graduates of the University of Texas at Austin, had for years been making the three-hour trip to their alma mater to attend Longhorn football games. While super-cool Austin is a city known for its film and music festivals, it’s also a place where football rivalries are serious — but fun — concerns. Each trip put them in a hotel for the weekend, or they stayed with friends

Over time, they had four children. As the family grew, so did the couple’s interest in purchasing a second home in Austin. However, they ended up buying wooded property on Lake Austin, a much sought-after area of scenic beauty and waterfront homes outside the city, and building what they refer to as their lake house.

“It’s a place to reconnect with the university,” says the husband. “But more important is having a second home with indoor and outdoor spaces for us, our extended families, and our guests so that everyone can enjoy the lake, water sports, and football games. We want to share this place. We feel like we’re out in the country, but our home is actually only minutes away from Austin’s great restaurants, the South by Southwest festival, and sporting events. We go to Austin for long weekends, most of the major holidays, and during the summer. We love lakeside living. Eleanor did a great job.”
