Months before Martin Hulbert began his work designing the rooms of a centuries-old Tuscan villa, he was asked by the clients to make an even bigger decision. The couple, based mostly in London, had asked Hulbert to come down from his London office to view the property, situated outside the city of Lucca, one of Tuscany’s most picturesque and historic walled cities. There amid the region’s mountains, the clients and Hulbert walked the land — examining the olive grove whose trees were filled with ripening fruit, a small planted garden vineyard, various outer buildings, and the large house itself, with its own chapel, portions of which date to the seventeenth century.
“They turned to me and said, ‘What do you think, do we buy it?’,” Hulbert recounts. “They love to ask my opinion. We had been viewing other properties in the area. But this was a totally idyllic setting and piece of architecture. I said yes.”
