AN EYE ON DESIGN
During her long career as an interior designer and, for the last decade, as the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of MILIEU, Pamela Pierce has seen lots of interiors—and lots of creative design interpretations of what makes for a comfortable, functional room.
“People have different needs at different phases of their lives,” says Pierce. “We come out of school and live for a while with our college furniture. Then we enter that phase where we buy what we can afford and that we can fit into our homes, followed then by a more grown-up phase when we begin buying good quality furnishings and fabrics.” Later in life, Pierce says, we enter a paring-down stage, which is how, she adds, “so many wonderful things turn up with antiques dealers.” Quality, comfort, and longevity are keystones of Pierce’s design philosophy, grounding the recommendations she makes for her own clients as well as the choices she makes for her own interiors. While editing a magazine has become her main profession, Pierce continues to take on many private design commissions.
The Houston home Pierce and her husband, Jesse, have shared for over 25 years was designed by Joseph Northrop, Jr., a prolific architect who, from the 1920s through the 1950s, designed many of the city’s prominent public buildings. Northrop is best known, however, for the suburban single-family houses like Pierce’s, built in 1926 with lath and plaster walls, a year she often cites as the zenith for great American residential architecture. Northrop designed such houses for the exclusive Houston subdivisions that he laid out. “Before we purchased the house,” explains Pierce, “my husband and I would ride our bicycles in this neighborhood, hoping that we would one day be living there.” She learned from a friend the house was on the market and, as she says with a laugh, “Fast forward, we’ve been remodeling and redecorating ever since!”
