LOFTY PURSUITS

When Nam Dang-Mitchell started looking for the perfect Manhattan pied-à-terre, she never imagined she’d end up where she did, in the relatively unpolished West Side neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. In fact, when she first encountered the loft that became her home away from home, the Calgary-based designer and her husband had all but settled on a far more traditional setting across town—a floor-through in a classic Upper East Side brownstone. Then, however, she fell hard for this space.

“Like most people, my favorite hobby is looking at New York real estate,” says Dang-Mitchell. “Forget Tinder. More love is found on Zillow.” When her swiping served up the loft—an airy, 1,600-square-foot one-bedroom in a century-old schoolhouse—she felt an instant connection. She texted her husband, who was in Manhattan about to move forward on the brownstone. “I said, ‘They’re having an open house. Go there’.” When he did, his excitement equaled her own. “He texted back, ‘The space is amazing. The windows are huge. The ceilings are so high’. So we made an offer.”

Purchasing it sight unseen, she admits, was something of a leap of faith. She barely knew the area. It was not where she thought she’d end up in Manhattan. But the first time she saw it in real life, it was too late to have any regrets. Thankfully, she had none, and, instead, felt primed to dive into designing.
