WELCOME TO MILIEU

In MILIEU, every story captures the look and feel, the mood and character, the style of a place—its milieu.

The milieu that defines a beautiful home or garden, the fashions and jewelry we wear, the places to which we travel, the art and culture we experience, the creative people who inspire us—these are the elements of MILIEU.

CURRENT ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS

Seasonal Transformations

When she’s at her California home, a Houston interior designer marks the seasons by tying on new slipcovers—colors and prints for the fall and winter, and calmer pastels for spring and summer

The Family That Stays Together

Cris Briger and her sons not only own and run Casa Gusto/Studio Gusto together, they also share a daily life in their Palm Beach home

Shared Vision

The imaginative color and poetic firebrand of Milton Avery is revealed in a touring landmark exhibition

In Spirit

Helen Ballard travels the world. During a week-long visit to Laos, she found colors and textures, rituals and customs unlike any in the 60 countries she has visited to date.

A Natural Woman

The professional collaboration between publishing legend Marian McEvoy and designer Kerry Joyce is grounded in nature-and mutual respect

The Great Cover-Up

Slipcovers allow you to make changes at home without making changes—or much of one. Old furniture becomes new. Add tassels and piping, trims and fringes, skirts and pleats to the slipcover, and the possibilities for transforming furniture and the rooms in which they figure become even greater—as Katrin Cargill, MILIEU's European Style Editor, proves here.

Getting Possessive

Maria Hummer-Tuttle understands the objects she owns—that they needn’t be valuable to be of value. Although she has long appreciated this perspective on the artworks, statuettes, jewelry, dishware—even the crayon drawings done by her grandchildren—in her possession, Hummer-Tuttle came to understand it in a profound way years ago while in her Los Angeles home.

A Modern Man

The imaginative color and poetic firebrand of Milton Avery is revealed in a touring landmark exhibition

Unloading with Tara Shaw

For several years, beginning in the late 90s, designers lucky enough to be in the New Orleans and Houston areas would mark their calendars for Tara Shaw’s new shipment dates. Shannon Bowers, MILIEU Editor-at-Large, catches up here with Tara just as she is unloading a new shipment.

Furlow’s Folly

In fond memory of Furlow Gatewood (August 28, 1921 - October 29, 2022), we wanted to share this story about Furlow's new collection, Furlow's Folly, with his dear friend John Rosselli, published in the Winter 2020 issue of MILIEU.  Even at the young age of 98, he never stopped designing beautiful pieces for the home.  "Furlow Gatewood: Always loved. Never Forgotten. Thank you." - Leslie Newsom Rascoe, MILIEU Design Director, and producer of "Furlow's Folly"  for MILIEU
