Of her work as a designer, Isabel López-Quesada describes herself well when she says, “I’m not boring or predictable.” The Spanish designer may be known for her emphatically personal interiors. However, her approach to design is always collaborative, and she relishes working with like-minded creative people. For this sprawling country house in the Spanish province of Segovia, López-Quesada worked closely not only with clients Gerardo Pérez-Durías and his wife, Rocio Ureta-Saorin, but also with the talented architect Pablo Carvajal and landscape designer Fernando Caruncho—as well as a trusted group of craftsmen. What resulted is an inspired family retreat that blends contemporary comforts with a soulful sense of history.

While Pérez-Durías and Ureta-Saorin spend most of their time in Madrid, where they live and work as real estate developers, they craved a weekend escape for themselves and their three daughters, especially in summer. So they purchased a vast 740-acre finca, or farm estate, just outside La Granja, a beautiful town in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, not far from the historic city of Segovia and about an hour’s drive from Madrid.

When the couple bought the property, it contained a modest house, which they occupied for a while. But they soon found it to be too compact for their needs—their dream was to be comfortable as a family during weekend visits and summer-long stays and also to entertain large groups of extended family and friends. They enlisted López-Quesada to create the interiors for a new, far larger house, set on inviting grounds.
